Desznica, Poland / Jaworze, Poland

Scott and I landed in Krakow, Poland on Sunday, September 30th around 10:00 am. Our friend and translator, Adam Jedryka, met us at the airport.

On our way South to Przemysl ("Peshemish") we stopped at a roadside inn, Agawa ("Agava") for lunch. We played it safe and ordered dishes known to us in America (beef stew & beef stroganoff). Although the dishes were prepared very differently, they were very tasty!

After lunch, we took a detour through Desznica ("Dezneetcha") and Jaworze ("Yavorja") where our ancestors lived.

This church resides on a hill in Desznica, where our ancestors lived. The only church in this Parish, our ancestors would have been baptized, and married in this church. Many are buried in the chuch's cemetery.

Views of the Polish countryside from the church yard:

The church was closed but I was able to snap a picture through the locked wrought iron gate at the entrance to the chapel.

The following is a gravestone of the Parish Priest. He performed many of the ordinances for our ancestors. We found his name on records we extracted.

The church cemetery is just beyond the gates west of the church yard. We spent quite a bit of time examining headstones. Adam is fluent in Russian and was able to translate for us.

A few just for fun:
"Holy Cow"

"A Man and His Cow"

The local schoolhouse

The combined length of the lane that stretches from Desznica to Jaworze is approximately a mile long. Here are a few of the houses as seen from the road:

We arrived in Przemysl late Sunday night. A couple of pictures of our accomodations above the Archives:
